China and India Plan High-Level Talks Between Xi and Modi Ahead of BRICS Summit

Beijing – In a clear signal of improving ties, China’s foreign ministry announced on Friday that it is coordinating a bilateral meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The meeting is slated to occur during Xi’s scheduled trip to India this weekend for the BRICS summit.

Strategic, long‑term perspective

Spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters that China is willing to approach its relationship with India “from a strategic and long‑term perspective.” She added that the two nations aim to enhance communication and cooperation while responsibly managing any differences that arise.

BRICS summit backdrop

President Xi will attend the BRICS summit, address the gathering, and engage in in‑depth exchanges with other world leaders on the current international situation, Mao said. The summit provides a natural platform for the two leaders to discuss regional security, trade, and other issues of mutual concern.

Why the meeting matters

China and India, the world’s two most populous countries, have a complex relationship marked by both competition and cooperation. Recent border tensions have underscored the need for diplomatic channels to prevent escalation. By arranging a direct dialogue between Xi and Modi, both governments signal a willingness to keep lines of communication open and to seek collaborative solutions on topics such as trade, climate change, and regional stability.

Official statements

“We hope to deepen strategic trust and expand practical cooperation,” Mao said, noting that the meeting will be an opportunity to discuss ways to manage differences constructively. The ministry did not provide details on the agenda, but past statements suggest that trade, infrastructure projects, and security coordination are likely topics.

Regional implications

Analysts note that a successful dialogue could have ripple effects across South Asia, potentially easing tensions in the contested Himalayan border areas. It may also influence the broader BRICS agenda, where both China and India seek to shape a more multipolar global order.

Looking ahead

While the exact timing and location of the Xi‑Modi meeting have not been disclosed, officials from both capitals are working to finalize arrangements. The outcome of the talks will be closely watched by regional partners and global observers alike, as it could set the tone for future cooperation between the two economic powerhouses.
