Kansas City, Mo. – The Kansas City Chiefs announced on Wednesday that veteran kicker Harrison Butker will suit up for the upcoming Sunday game against the New York Jets. Head coach Andy Reid said, “Harrison will be up, yeah,” confirming the decision despite Butker’s recent miss in the loss to the Denver Broncos.
Recent miss and its impact
In the fourth quarter of the Broncos game, the Chiefs held a 24‑13 lead before Denver rallied with two touchdowns. Butker attempted a 54‑yard field goal that would have reduced the deficit to three points, potentially changing the final play. The kick fell short, and Kansas City ultimately fell 28‑24 after Denver scored a late touchdown.
The miss marked Butker’s 16th unsuccessful attempt since the start of last season, the most among NFL kickers over that span.
Butker’s response
After the game, Butker described the attempt as a “bad miss,” saying, “Just missed it. Didn’t even give it a chance. Didn’t feel good off the foot. Just not good.” He added that the miss was especially puzzling because he had a strong practice week following the signing of former All‑Pro Justin Tucker to the practice squad.
“Justin’s been great. Enjoyed talking with him and getting to know him a little bit more,” Butker said. “So it was a good week of practice, but it doesn’t matter — you’ve got to make them in the game.”
Other Chiefs updates
Coach Reid also noted that first‑round pick cornerback Mansoor Delane returned to practice after missing two games with a shoulder injury. Offensive guard Kingsley Suamataia is expected back after sitting out two straight games, a decision Reid described as a “coach’s decision.”
Defensive lineman Peter Woods remained out of practice with a neck stinger, according to Reid.
Looking ahead
The Chiefs are expected to explore a wide‑receiver acquisition before the upcoming trade deadline, though Reid deferred to general manager Brett Veach for details. “Just see where it all goes,” Reid said. “He’s great with all that. If he can make things happen, he’ll make things happen.”
Sunday’s matchup against the Jets will be the first test for Butker after the Denver loss, and the Chiefs hope the veteran can rebound and help secure a win as they chase a playoff berth.
