The CTU’s endorsement of Johnson in 2023 helped propel him to victory in the primary and runoff elections. The union funneled over $2.6 million into Johnson’s campaign, with teachers unions collectively contributing over $6 million.

CTU’s Policy Agenda

During his tenure, Johnson has overseen the transition to a hybrid school board, with 10 members elected by voters and 11 appointed by the mayor. The CTU has been a key player in shaping Johnson’s policy agenda, with some critics arguing that his platform is dictated by the union machine.

The CTU’s demands have included a 9% annual wage increase, 100% coverage for abortions and fertility treatments, and $2,000 stipends per child for migrant families.
