Chicago Fire loans 18‑year‑old defender Christopher Cupps to Greenock Morton

Chicago Fire sporting director Gregg Broughton confirmed Monday that the club has sent 18‑year‑old defender Christopher Cupps on loan to Greenock Morton FC of Scotland. The loan agreement runs through the end of the 2026 season, and Chicago retains the right to recall Cupps at any time.

Development opportunity for a promising youngster

“We are excited to see Christopher continue to develop during the rest of the year in a new and challenging environment,” Broughton said. “He has very high potential and a promising future with the Chicago Fire, and he has stepped up to every challenge he has faced so far. Playing competitive matches during the rest of the year will only help him mature as a player and as a person.”

Cupps, who has appeared in six matches — three of them starts — for the Fire over the past two seasons, will join Morton as the Scottish club looks to bolster its defensive options. The move gives the teenager regular first‑team minutes that are harder to secure in MLS, while exposing him to a different style of play and a new cultural setting.

What the loan means for Chicago Fire

The Fire see the loan as a strategic step in their youth development pipeline. By allowing Cupps to compete in the Scottish Championship, the club hopes he will return with enhanced tactical awareness, physical resilience, and confidence. Those attributes are expected to translate into stronger performances when he re‑joins the Fire roster next season.

Chicago’s coaching staff will continue to monitor Cupps’ progress closely, receiving regular reports from Morton’s staff. Should the Fire need additional defensive depth before the season concludes, the recall clause gives them flexibility to bring the player back.

Greenock Morton’s perspective

Greenock Morton welcomed the addition, noting that Cupps brings youthful energy and a solid defensive foundation. The club’s manager highlighted the benefit of integrating an MLS‑trained player into the squad, expecting him to contribute both on the pitch and in training.

For Morton, the loan aligns with their ongoing strategy of blending experienced professionals with emerging talent to remain competitive in the league.

Looking ahead

Christopher Cupps’ loan marks another example of MLS clubs leveraging international partnerships to accelerate player growth. As the season progresses, both Chicago Fire fans and Morton supporters will be watching closely to see how the young defender adapts to Scottish football and whether the experience propels his career forward.
