Chicago Bears Plan New Stadium in Northwest Indiana

The Chicago Bears have announced plans to develop a new stadium in Hammond, Indiana, following a stall in financial incentives from the Illinois state legislature. The decision was made by the Bears’ board of directors, who voted to proceed with the project in Northwest Indiana, despite not having finalized an exact site.

Regional Impact and Economic Growth

The Bears’ leadership, including Chairman George McCaskey and team president Kevin Warren, expressed optimism about the project, stating it would connect Northwest Indiana to the South Side of Chicago and provide new opportunities for residents and businesses. Indiana Governor Mike Braun welcomed the announcement, highlighting the potential economic boost for the region.

A bill passed by an Indiana House committee in February established a Northwest Indiana Stadium Authority to finance, construct, and lease the stadium. Governor Braun likened the anticipated partnership to the strength of the ’85 Bears defense, emphasizing the long-term benefits for both the state and the Bears organization.

Historical Context and Future Plans

The Bears, a charter NFL franchise, have a storied history in Illinois, having played there since their founding in 1920. Their current lease at Soldier Field extends through 2033, but they have the option to break it early. The proposed Hammond location is approximately 20 miles south of Soldier Field.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker remains open to finding a solution that protects taxpayers, as the Bears have shifted their stadium plans multiple times in recent years. The team had previously considered Arlington Heights, Illinois, and even explored options to build near Soldier Field.

While the Bears continue discussions with Illinois officials, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is lobbying for the team to remain in the city. The Bears must still secure NFL approval for the new stadium location, with the league being kept informed of developments.

Community and Legislative Reactions

Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. praised the decision, calling Hammond a city of opportunity and an excellent choice for such a significant investment. Meanwhile, Illinois State Rep. Kam Buckner, whose district includes Soldier Field, noted ongoing discussions with the Bears about their stadium pursuits in Illinois.

The Bears’ pursuit of a new home has been marked by numerous changes in direction, including a previously finalized purchase agreement for land in Arlington Heights and a multi-billion dollar plan for an enclosed stadium there. However, efforts to secure tax incentives and public funding in Illinois have led the team to explore options in Indiana.
