Cherie DeVaux Returns to Saratoga for Belmont Stakes After Historic Derby Win

Cherie DeVaux, a native of Saratoga Springs, New York, is making headlines as she returns to her hometown for the Belmont Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. Just weeks after becoming the first woman to train a Kentucky Derby winner, DeVaux is preparing to watch her horse, Golden Tempo, compete in the 158th Belmont Stakes.

DeVaux’s journey in horse racing began in Saratoga, where she worked as a hot walker for the late trainer Chuck Simon. Her passion for the sport led her to pursue a career as an exercise rider, and eventually, she became an assistant trainer under Chad Brown. This experience paved the way for her to open her own stable in Lexington, Kentucky, in 2018.

Despite her Kentucky base, DeVaux’s ties to Saratoga have fostered strong local support. Todd Shimkus, President of the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce, noted the excitement surrounding DeVaux’s return, highlighting her connection to the community and the pride in her achievements.

DeVaux’s recent Kentucky Derby victory with Golden Tempo, a 23-1 long shot, has brought her significant attention. However, she remains focused on her role as a trainer, emphasizing her dedication to the sport rather than her historic status as a female trainer.

As the Belmont Stakes takes place in Saratoga for the last time before returning to Belmont Park, DeVaux looks forward to sharing the experience with her family, including her nieces and nephews, who rarely attend races. The event offers a chance for DeVaux to celebrate her accomplishments in the town where her career began.

Janet Elliot, the only woman inducted into the National Horse Racing Hall of Fame as a trainer, expressed her support for DeVaux, sharing a similar sentiment of focusing on the job rather than gender barriers. DeVaux’s success continues to inspire many in the horse racing community, as she remains committed to her passion and the sport she loves.
