Chef Tiffany Derry highlights true Southern cooking traditions

Texas native chef and restaurateur Tiffany Derry, known from “Top Chef” and now a judge on “MasterChef,” shared her perspective on Southern cuisine during a Fox News Digital interview. Derry emphasized that the common image of Southern food as heavy and unhealthy overlooks the everyday meals that sustained her family for generations.

Family farms and fresh produce

“We had a farm,” Derry said. “I ate from the farm very much.” She recalled growing up with a routine of fresh vegetables long before the term “farm‑to‑table” entered restaurant jargon. For Derry, the practice was simply what families did: neighbors exchanged home‑grown produce, and meals featured modest portions of meat alongside rice, peas, beans and a variety of greens.

Beyond mac and cheese

Derry warned against reducing Southern cooking to a handful of dishes such as mac and cheese, biscuits and gravy. “Those heavier dishes represented a very small amount of the cooking and weren’t everyday foods in my experience,” she explained. Instead, the region’s culinary heritage includes a wide range of vegetable‑centric plates that reflect the agricultural roots of the South.

Cooking as a family tradition

With a grandmother who raised eleven children and more than fifty cousins, Derry described how cooking was a communal activity. As a child she helped prepare greens, peas and green beans, learning the value of home‑grown food and shared meals.

Renewed interest in home cooking

After 27 years in the restaurant industry, Derry observes a resurgence of home cooking among younger generations. She noted a period when many Americans seemed to be cooking less, but today people are turning to TikTok for recipes, hosting home gatherings and even embracing bread‑making. “I love the fact that people are interested in sourdough. Like, are you kidding me? People are back making bread,” she said.

Modern twists on classic fare

Promoting a partnership with Tostitos for a new Chunky Guacamole, Derry highlighted how tailgating foods have evolved from simple burgers to more elaborate spreads, including Kobe beef sliders and Instagram‑ready platters. Yet she reminded viewers that the essence of Southern cooking remains rooted in fresh, locally sourced ingredients.

Looking ahead

Derry’s comments underscore a broader cultural shift: a renewed appreciation for the simplicity and nutrition of traditional Southern meals, and a desire among younger cooks to learn through digital platforms and hands‑on experience. As she continues to mentor home chefs on “MasterChef,” Derry hopes the next generation will carry forward the values of fresh, family‑centered cooking that defined her own upbringing.
