The Chattanooga Times Free Press, a newspaper that has served the community for decades, has been sold to Craig and Max Fuller, effective Friday, for an undisclosed sum.
Local Leadership
The newspaper has built a reputation across Tennessee and the Southeast for exceptional journalism and fearless accountability reporting. Despite its strong journalism, the newspaper has not been profitable. The new owners hope that with local leadership, the Times Free Press will find a sustainable path forward and continue to be a trustworthy news source for the community.
The Chattanooga Times was founded in 1869, and the Chattanooga Free Press began publishing in 1933. Walter Hussman Jr., chairman of WEHCO Media, bought the Chattanooga Free Press in 1998 and merged the two newspapers. Hussman believes that local ownership is key to a news organization’s success, as owners who live and work in the community will be more responsive and accountable to the public they serve.
Craig Fuller will serve as chief executive officer of the Chattanooga Times Free Press. He has spent the past decade in media acquisitions and startups and has founded several companies, including FreightWaves and Firecrown Media. Fuller plans to restore the Times Free Press to profitability while investing in its future.
