Chatham school board members report death threats after lawsuit over gender‑identity policy

CHATHAM, N.J. – Members of the Chatham School Board disclosed that they have received death threats and required additional security following a lawsuit that challenges the district’s 2024 gender‑identity policy. The policy allows students to be identified by the gender they choose without the school notifying parents.

Board reaction and community response

Board member Michael Ryan described the post‑lawsuit environment as “shameful,” noting that the threats have forced the board to increase security measures at public meetings. “What has happened since that lawsuit is shameful, absolutely shameful, the threats and the security now that we need because of that,” Ryan said.

Mom’s for Liberty, a national parent‑rights organization, voiced concern over the threats. CEO Tina Descovich said civil discourse is essential when discussing policies that affect children. “It’s not acceptable in this environment in America. We can have civil discourse and debate about how we addressed ideas and policy is in processes, especially when it comes to our children,” Descovich said.

Policy details and parental concerns

The policy, adopted in 2024, requires staff to respect a student’s self‑identified gender in all school interactions, including name usage, pronouns, and restroom access, without notifying parents. Critics argue that the policy compels other students to use pronouns that may conflict with their own beliefs.

A speaker representing Moms for Liberty warned that the policy could force students to address peers using pronouns they disagree with, potentially leading to disciplinary action up to expulsion for accidental misuse.

One parent, Allison Thomas, whose child is a transgender student in the district, defended the policy, saying it can protect vulnerable youth from retaliation at home. “Common advice to trans teenagers coming out to their parents includes things like having a specific plan on where you will sleep tonight if you’re thrown out of the house and paying attention to whether you have a clean line to exit in case they try to assault or murder you. It’s not paranoia. These things happened,” Thomas said.

Public comments and ongoing debate

During the board meeting, several community members voiced support for the policy, emphasizing the need to protect transgender students. “If there are any of our trans kids watching tonight or any of our trans folks in our community, I’d like them to know that they’re supported. Thank you,” one attendee said.

The board has not indicated any immediate changes to the policy, but the heightened security and ongoing public outcry suggest the issue will remain a focal point of future meetings.

Legal context

The lawsuit challenging the policy argues that parents have a constitutional right to be informed about significant decisions affecting their children’s education and welfare. The district maintains that the policy complies with state anti‑discrimination statutes and is intended to create a safe environment for all students.

As the legal battle proceeds, the Chatham School Board continues to navigate the tension between protecting student privacy and addressing parental concerns, while ensuring the safety of board members and the public.
