Charter plane carrying eight crashes near Cape Newenham in Alaska

Western Alaska was the scene of a tragic aviation accident on Thursday when a chartered Cessna 441 carrying eight occupants crashed near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site. The flight, operated by Security Aviation, departed Anchorage bound for the remote Air Force airstrip at Cape Newenham, roughly 450 miles southwest of the city.

Flight details and initial response

According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the aircraft was scheduled to arrive at the Cape Newenham Airport around 12:15 p.m. local time. The plane went down on land close to the airstrip, which serves the military radar installation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Alaska region chief, Clint Johnson, confirmed that two pilots and six passengers were aboard the charter flight.

The status of those on board was not immediately known, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The FAA and the NTSB have opened a joint investigation, with the NTSB taking the lead. The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center, operated by the Alaska Air National Guard, launched a search‑and‑rescue mission after receiving an FAA alert. Rescue forces were reported on scene later that afternoon.

Official reactions

Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski posted a statement on X expressing her sympathy for the victims and their families. “I’ve traveled extensively with Security Aviation throughout Alaska, and have met many of their experienced pilots,” Murkowski wrote. She also thanked the U.S. Coast Guard, the NTSB, Alaska State Troopers, and the Rescue Coordination Center for their rapid response, adding, “Alaska is praying for those on board, their loved ones, and the team at Security Aviation.”

Regulatory context

Cape Newenham is a restricted facility; only military and approved charter flights are permitted to land there. Security Aviation, a regional carrier that provides charter services to remote Alaskan locations, has a long history of operating in the challenging terrain and weather conditions of the state.

Both the FAA and the NTSB will conduct a thorough review of flight data, pilot qualifications, aircraft maintenance records, and weather conditions at the time of the incident. Findings from the investigation will be released to the public as they become available.

What’s next for families and the community

Local authorities have urged anyone with information about the crash to contact the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center. Community members, especially those who rely on charter services for travel to remote outposts, are watching the investigation closely, hoping for answers that could improve safety for future flights.

Security Aviation has not yet issued a public comment beyond acknowledging the incident. The airline’s reputation for serving isolated Alaskan communities underscores the importance of rigorous safety standards in this demanding environment.
