Charleston residents will see a temporary shift in their trash and recycling schedules during the 2026 holiday season. The city’s Public Works Department released a detailed calendar showing which days service will be moved and when collection will pause for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Thanksgiving week (Nov. 23‑27)
During the week of Thanksgiving, the normal Tuesday pickup moves to Monday, Nov. 23. Wednesday’s service moves to Tuesday, Nov. 24, and Thursday’s service moves to Wednesday, Nov. 25. Friday’s collection remains on Friday, Nov. 26. No trash or recycling will be collected on Thanksgiving Day itself, Thursday, Nov. 26.
Christmas week (Dec. 21‑25)
For the Christmas holiday, Tuesday’s pickup is advanced to Monday, Dec. 21. Wednesday’s service shifts to Tuesday, Dec. 22, and Thursday’s service shifts to Wednesday, Dec. 23. Friday’s collection moves to Thursday, Dec. 24. As usual, no trash or recycling will be taken on Christmas Day, Friday, Dec. 25.
New Year’s week (Dec. 28‑Jan. 1)
In the final week of the year, Tuesday’s pickup moves to Monday, Dec. 28. Wednesday’s service moves to Tuesday, Dec. 29, Thursday’s to Wednesday, Dec. 30, and Friday’s to Thursday, Dec. 31. No collection will occur on New Year’s Day, Friday, Jan. 1.
The city emphasized that these adjustments are intended to give workers a safe holiday break while still ensuring residents’ waste is handled promptly. Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, placing their bins out on the newly assigned days and remembering that no service will occur on the three federal holidays.
To keep the community informed, Charleston will post reminders on its official social‑media channels, publish notices in local newspapers, and send automated phone calls to households. The city’s Public Works Director noted that the schedule aligns with standard holiday practices in many municipalities and helps maintain a smooth operation for both staff and residents.
Households that miss the revised pickup day may experience a short delay, but the department assures that regular service will resume on the first weekday after each holiday. Residents with special waste disposal needs, such as large items or hazardous materials, should contact the city’s waste hotline for guidance on proper handling during the holiday period.
Charleston’s commitment to reliable public services extends beyond waste collection. The city continues to invest in infrastructure upgrades, recycling education programs, and environmentally responsible practices that benefit families and neighborhoods throughout Kanawha County.
