Charles River Algae Bloom Warning

Massachusetts health officials are warning people and pets to avoid part of the Charles River due to a potentially harmful cyanobacteria bloom. The affected area includes Cutler Park and Millennium Park, between Kendrick Street in Needham and Spring Street in West Roxbury.

Warning Signs Posted

Warning signs have been posted at access points along the river. Dog owners are advised to keep their pets away from the water, as a dog recently died from liver failure after possible exposure to algal toxins near Millennium Park.

The type of algae suspected in the area, benthic cyanobacteria, can be difficult to spot and may not always produce visible blooms. Warm temperatures, sunlight, excess nutrient runoff, and stagnant or slow-moving water can promote cyanobacteria growth.

People should avoid swimming, kayaking, or coming into contact with the water or shoreline in the affected area. Pet owners should not allow animals to swim in or drink from the river. Anyone who comes into contact with the water or algae should rinse off immediately.

State health officials have collected water samples to test for cyanobacteria cells and toxins, with laboratory results expected soon.
