Chargers coach Harbaugh cites preseason prep regrets after Week 1 loss

Los Angeles – In the wake of a 26‑14 Week 1 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh expressed regret over the team’s limited preseason preparation. Speaking at the post‑game press conference on Monday, Harbaugh admitted that the Chargers “made some preseason‑type of mistakes” and wished they had given more reps to their starters during the preseason.

Preseason usage under scrutiny

Harbaugh noted that the Chargers only saw their starters play brief stints in the second and third preseason games. He argued that this limited exposure left the roster under‑prepared for the season opener. “Now in retrospect, I wish we’d played our guys a little bit more in the preseason and given them those reps,” he said.

Key injuries and missed opportunities

The loss was compounded by an injury to star wide receiver Ladd McConkey, who left the game in the third quarter with a rib injury. Before exiting, McConkey recorded five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Harbaugh confirmed the receiver is “day‑to‑day” and will be evaluated before the next matchup.

Beyond the injury, the Chargers’ offense managed only two touchdowns, a stark contrast to the Cardinals, who were expected to struggle after a 3‑14 season last year. The Cardinals, who allowed 20.9 points per game last season (tied for 21st in the league), looked markedly improved on Sunday.

Harbaugh calls performance sloppy

Describing the overall effort, Harbaugh labeled the showing “sloppy at times. Too sloppy.” He highlighted a blocked punt, an interception, and a turnover on downs as clear signs of the team’s lack of execution. “Some uncharacteristic things happened. Give the Cardinals credit for making them happen,” he added.

Looking ahead to the Raiders

The Chargers will aim to correct these early‑season missteps when they host the Las Vegas Raiders (1‑0) at 4:25 p.m. EST on Sunday. Harbaugh emphasized that the team must address the identified issues quickly to stay competitive in a tough AFC West division.

Context and outlook

While the Cardinals entered the season as underdogs, their improved performance underscores the importance of thorough preparation. The Chargers’ coaching staff now faces the task of translating preseason lessons into a more disciplined, error‑free approach as the regular season progresses.
