CFDA chief Steven Kolb apologizes after physically confronting PETA protesters at NYFW

New York – At the Swedish brand COS’s Fall‑Winter 2026 runway during New York Fashion Week, the chief executive of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), Steven Kolb, was captured on video physically confronting two animal‑rights activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The incident sparked immediate criticism from the activist group and raised questions about security protocols at high‑profile fashion events.

What happened on the runway

Video footage shows Kolb grabbing the protesters, snatching at their printed signs and covering their mouths as they shouted slogans such as “get wool off the runway now.” At one point Kolb wrapped his leg around one activist, pinning the individual to the floor while models continued down the catwalk. The activists later told CNN they were unaware of Kolb’s identity until after the encounter.

Kolb’s response

Shortly after the show, Kolb posted on Instagram Stories: “I reacted inappropriately to an incident at a show earlier today. It wasn’t my place to do so. I should have let the security team handle the situation.” He did not provide further comment to CNN’s request for an interview.

PETA’s reaction

PETA described the incident as an “assault” and reiterated its ongoing campaign to pressure H&M Group, the parent company of COS, to stop using wool in its products. The organization said the protesters are filing a police report and are considering criminal charges, though one activist, 22‑year‑old Mason Melito, said they are still weighing their options and would like to speak directly with Kolb.

Background on the wool controversy

The CFDA announced a ban on animal fur at New York Fashion Week last December, but the policy does not extend to wool or other animal‑hair fibers. PETA has long targeted H&M’s wool supply chain, alleging mistreatment of sheep at a South African facility linked to the retailer. H&M Group has stated its goal of sourcing 100% of wool from certified responsible farms, recycled sources, or non‑animal fibers by 2026, though no direct evidence has been presented linking the specific farm to H&M products.

CFDA’s role in New York Fashion Week

With more than 300 member designers and labels, the CFDA organizes New York Fashion Week and hosts the annual “Oscars of Fashion” awards ceremony. Kolb has served as the organization’s CEO since 2011, overseeing the event’s growth and its increasing emphasis on sustainability.

Implications for future shows

The incident underscores the need for clear security procedures when activist groups target high‑visibility events. While the CFDA has not announced any changes to its security protocols, Kolb’s public apology suggests an awareness that the organization must balance the right to peaceful protest with the safety and smooth operation of the runway.

As New York Fashion Week continues through Tuesday, designers, models and attendees are watching closely to see how the CFDA addresses the fallout and whether additional measures will be taken to prevent similar confrontations.
