Dozens of Central Oregon residents gathered in Bend to protest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions, citing concerns over recent enforcement actions both locally and nationwide.
Local Protest
The demonstration comes after a fatal encounter earlier this week in Houston, Texas, where a Mexican man was shot and killed by ICE officers. Federal officials say the man rammed a law enforcement vehicle and did not comply with verbal commands during a traffic stop.
Organizers with 50-51 Central Oregon also claim two community members were arrested by ICE earlier this week. The identities of those involved have not been independently confirmed by local news outlets.
Some protesters connected the incident to broader concerns about immigration enforcement policies and leadership at the federal level. "I'm here to protest against the current administration and Immigration and Customs Enforcement," said Michael Graham, a Bend resident attending the demonstration.
Others emphasized civic engagement as a response. "I'm hoping to get people involved so people will make sure to get out and vote in the midterms for the party that will put a check on the current administration," said Gary, another Bend resident.
