As central Iowans prepare to cast their votes, Polk County Auditor Jamie Fitzgerald stresses the importance of confirming polling locations. Voters can resolve any confusion by visiting VoterReady.Iowa.Gov, ensuring they know where to go on election day.
Fitzgerald reminds voters that an approved form of identification is necessary. Acceptable IDs include an Iowa driver’s license or non-operator ID, a U.S. passport, a U.S. military ID, or a veteran’s ID. This requirement is particularly crucial for those who have moved since the last election, as they may need to report to a new polling location.
“If you’re moving within the county, you just have to prove your identification,” Fitzgerald explained. “But if you’re registering for the first time, you actually have to prove not only your identification but also where you live now — that can be a bill.”
Expected Voter Turnout
Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate anticipates a lower turnout for Tuesday’s primary compared to four years ago. “The numbers are actually down from four years ago. So I think it’s going to be a little lighter,” Pate noted.
Pate also cautions voters not to assume all races will be settled by Tuesday night. In the Republican governor’s race, for instance, a candidate must secure more than 35% of the vote to win the nomination outright. “If they don’t, they will then go to convention,” Pate said, highlighting the potential for extended decision-making in this race.
