Central Iowa Water Works Reports Few Fines

It has been 10 days since the Central Iowa Water Works (CIWW) lawn watering ban went into effect, and a majority of the member organizations say they haven’t had to shut water off or issue fines for repeat violators.

Watering Ban Details

The ban requires commercial, government, and residential customers to stop most outdoor watering. Lawn watering is prohibited except for newly installed sod or seed planted during the current growing season. Sports fields and golf courses may continue limited irrigation only to maintain safety and preserve turf.

KCCI reached out to all 12 CIWW member organizations and heard back from eight. Some reported issuing notices, but no shutoffs or fines have occurred. The organizations that responded appreciate the efforts being made by people and hope this continues until the ban is lifted.

Notices Issued

The following organizations reported issuing notices: Norwalk (140), Johnston (20), Ankeny (19), Clive (10), Des Moines Water Works (4), Polk City (several), Waukee (several), and Warren County Water District (0).

As the ban continues, more people are using at-home test kits to check their tap water. Experts remind users to follow the instructions carefully to get accurate results.

Water Conservation Efforts

Some organizations, like Hubbell Realty Co., are taking steps to conserve water. At Gray’s Station, a neighborhood in Des Moines, the company has implemented built-in water savers, including buckets to catch rainfall and fake turf to reduce watering needs.
