As e-bikes and e-scooters return to Central Florida roads with the start of the school year, Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and local first responders are working together to address the growing number of accidents involving these devices.

Orange and Osceola County Fire Rescue are partnering with Orlando Health hospitals to ensure they are prepared to treat injuries from e-bike and e-scooter accidents. Experts emphasize that how quickly a patient is treated in the field can be a matter of life or death.
Dr. Mark Levy, a pediatric trauma surgeon at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, noted that the hospital has seen an increase in traumatic brain injuries and facial fractures from micromobility devices compared to regular bicycles. While standard bike helmets protect the head and provide good visibility, they do not protect the face.
Motorcycle helmets, however, limit visibility, leaving doctors uncertain about a better alternative. For now, medical experts said children need to slow down and follow all traffic rules to ensure the safety of both riders and pedestrians.
