CenterPoint Energy Enhances Preparedness for Houston’s Hurricane Season

CenterPoint Energy is taking significant steps to bolster its preparedness for the upcoming hurricane season in Greater Houston. With a focus on building a resilient coastal grid, the company is implementing a range of measures to ensure the safety and reliability of its services during extreme weather events.

Infrastructure and Community Initiatives

As part of its preparedness strategy, CenterPoint Energy is upgrading infrastructure by installing storm-resistant poles and undergrounding power lines in vulnerable areas. The company is also clearing higher-risk vegetation to minimize potential disruptions. In addition, a new customer tool has been introduced for tracking the General Health Rating Index, providing residents with valuable information about their local energy grid.

CenterPoint is coordinating closely with local emergency officials and plans to host community events across the Greater Houston area. These events aim to educate residents on how to prepare for severe weather, reinforcing the importance of community involvement in disaster readiness.

Advanced Weather Monitoring and Training

To enhance weather monitoring capabilities, CenterPoint is adding 150 weather stations, which will improve the accuracy of weather forecasts and storm tracking. The company is also conducting a full-scale hurricane response exercise involving over 400 employees, ensuring that its team is well-prepared for any eventuality.

CenterPoint has invested over 25,000 hours in FEMA training for more than 800 employees, emphasizing the importance of readiness and rapid response in the face of natural disasters. The integration of Technosylva’s platform allows for advanced outage forecasting, storm modeling, and flood risk analysis, enabling more efficient mobilization of crews and faster restoration of services.

Looking Ahead

The National Weather Service predicts eight to 14 named storms in the Atlantic basin this season, including three to six hurricanes. CenterPoint Energy’s proactive measures are designed to mitigate the impact of these potential storms, ensuring that the Greater Houston community remains resilient and well-prepared.
