Cedar River Trail: Renton’s Most Scenic Escape Hiding in Plain Sight

There’s a moment, maybe five minutes into a walk along the Cedar River Trail, when the sound of traffic fades completely and all you can hear is the rush of cold, clear water tumbling over smooth river rocks. That moment is worth the trip to Renton all by itself — and trust me, it only gets better from there.

The Cedar River Trail stretches roughly 17 miles, but the most beloved and accessible stretch begins right in downtown Renton and winds eastward through some of the most quietly beautiful scenery in the entire Puget Sound region. The trailhead at Liberty Park puts you steps from the river almost immediately, and from there you’re immersed in a corridor of towering cottonwoods, red alders, and willows that practically glow in the golden afternoon light of late summer.

What makes this trail genuinely special — beyond its natural beauty — is its accessibility and variety. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist logging miles on a weekend morning, a parent pushing a stroller through the shaded riverside path, or someone who simply needs an hour away from a screen, the Cedar River Trail delivers without demanding anything extreme in return. The paved surface is smooth and well-maintained, gentle grades make it approachable for nearly every fitness level, and there are multiple entry points along the route so you can tailor your outing however you like.

Come late fall or early winter and you’ll witness something that stops first-time visitors in their tracks: the salmon run. Sockeye salmon return to the Cedar River each year to spawn, and watching these determined fish push upstream through crystalline water is one of those rare, humbling wildlife encounters you don’t expect to find this close to a city. The Renton Parks Department even hosts guided salmon viewing events in season — a fantastic outing for families and anyone who appreciates the resilience of the natural world.

The trail also connects to a network of parks along the way, including Ron Regis Park and Riverview Park, where picnic tables, open lawns, and interpretive signage about the river ecosystem give you good reasons to slow down and linger. Birders will want to bring binoculars — great blue herons, belted kingfishers, and mergansers are regular sightings along this stretch of river.

Parking near Liberty Park is easy and generally free, and the trailhead is well-signed from downtown Renton. Dogs on leashes are welcome, which only adds to the friendly, community feel of the place. On a sunny weekend morning, you’ll see neighbors greeting each other by name, kids chasing ducks at the water’s edge, and cyclists cheerfully calling out as they pass. It feels less like a trail and more like a gathering place — one that happens to be extraordinarily beautiful.

If Renton ever needed a single ambassador to win over skeptics, the Cedar River Trail would be it. Come once and you’ll understand why the locals keep it moving at the top of their must-share list.
