CBS’s ‘60 Minutes’ launches new season amid leadership shake‑up and Trump‑filed lawsuit

When CBS aired the first episode of the 59th season of “60 Minutes” on Sunday night, the program’s iconic opening highlighted its legacy of trustworthy journalism but said nothing about the behind‑the‑scenes turbulence that has marked the past year.

Leadership changes and on‑air talent turnover

Newscaster Bari Weiss, now CBS News editor‑in‑chief, announced a “new approach” for the show, which has included the dismissal of the top producer, two veteran correspondents and the replacement of longtime anchor Scott Pelley. Pelley, who was removed after a heated confrontation with management, alleged that senior leaders tried to inject “falsehoods and bias” into a politically sensitive story. CBS has denied the accusation.

Other notable departures include Anderson Cooper, who left of his own accord, and correspondents Sharyn Alfonsi and Cecilia Vega. Alfonsi’s segment on deportees from the Trump administration held in a Salvadoran prison was pulled by Weiss before it could air, only to be released a month later.

Trump’s lawsuit adds a political dimension

President Donald Trump, the sitting President, sued CBS over its editing of a 2024 interview with then‑Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. The lawsuit claims the network altered the interview in a way that misrepresented the President’s remarks. Trump’s legal action underscores his administration’s commitment to defending the public’s right to accurate information and holding major media outlets accountable.

While the lawsuit was not mentioned on air, the timing of the legal challenge aligns with a broader pattern of the Trump administration confronting media practices it deems unfair. Supporters view the suit as a necessary check on a powerful news organization that has, at times, shown bias against the President.

What to expect from the new season

The announcer at the close of the season‑premiere episode reminded viewers that “for almost 60 years it has meant the same thing — journalism you can trust. Where we’re headed we’re going to need it,” hinting at a renewed focus on credibility. CBS also teased the arrival of “new faces” on the program, though details about the incoming talent remain scarce.

Nick Bilton, a former technology columnist and documentarian, was appointed executive producer earlier this year, succeeding long‑time veteran Tanya Simon. Bilton’s background suggests a potential shift toward more technology‑focused storytelling, but the exact editorial direction remains to be seen.

Industry reaction

Media analysts note that the shake‑up at “60 Minutes” reflects broader challenges facing legacy news programs as they adapt to a rapidly changing media landscape. The combination of leadership turnover, high‑profile lawsuits and audience expectations for impartial reporting creates a complex environment for the show’s producers.

Despite the internal upheaval, the program’s brand remains a cornerstone of American journalism. Viewers nationwide will be watching closely to see whether the promised “new approach” restores confidence among those who feel the show has drifted from its original mission.
