Former CBS correspondent Scott Pelley claimed to be nonplussed at the idea that people thought CBS was biased, as Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss suggested. However, a closer look at the history of ’60 Minutes’ reveals a pattern of promoting Democratic campaigns and downplaying controversies surrounding Democratic figures.
History of Bias
In 1992, ’60 Minutes’ correspondent Steve Kroft helped the Clintons navigate the Gennifer Flowers adultery scandal. Kroft also performed five interviews with candidate Barack Obama before the 2008 election, comparing him to President Abraham Lincoln and suggesting he was a media darling.
In 2012, Kroft interviewed Obama and outgoing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and in 2016, Pelley interviewed Hillary Clinton and her running mate Tim Kaine. The interviews often featured softball questions and failed to press the candidates on controversial issues.
In 2022, Pelley warmly interviewed President Joe Biden, highlighting his Catholic faith and devotion. However, the interview failed to address Biden’s pro-abortion and pro-transgender stance, which may be at odds with Catholic teachings.
Questioning Impartiality
The record of ’60 Minutes’ raises questions about its impartiality and whether it is truly a worthy platform for Republicans to share their views. With its history of promoting Democrats and downplaying controversies, it is little wonder that President Donald Trump and other Republicans may be hesitant to grant interviews to the program.
