Casting For A Cure Bass Tournament Unites Lubbock Anglers to Support Children with Cancer

On Saturday, September 26, anglers gathered at Buffalo Springs Lake for the annual Casting For A Cure bass tournament, a community‑focused fundraiser that benefits the Lubbock Pediatric Cancer Association. The event, organized by local volunteers, combines friendly competition with a mission to help West Texas families facing the challenges of pediatric cancer.

Event details

Boats departed the lake marina at 6:45 a.m., and fishing officially began at 7 a.m. Participants fished until 2 p.m., with hourly weigh‑ins that offered cash prizes: $100 for first place, $50 for second, and a $500 prize for the overall big bass. Entry costs $40 per person and includes one raffle ticket; additional tickets are available with prizes awarded after the tournament.

Anglers do not need a dedicated bass boat—bank fishing and boat fishing are both permitted. The tournament rules require artificial bait only, one pole per angler, and prohibit trolling and fishing beneath the bridge. All Texas Parks and Wildlife Department regulations apply.

Where the money goes

All proceeds stay in Lubbock, directly supporting the Lubbock Pediatric Cancer Association. The organization provides a range of services to children with cancer and their families, including toys and activities for hospitalized kids, medications not covered by insurance, school technology, travel and lodging assistance, scholarships, summer camps, family events, and grief counseling. These resources address real, pressing needs for local families during an incredibly difficult time.

Local business support

The tournament receives backing from a variety of Lubbock businesses and community members, such as C&D Waste, Taylor Stephens Real Estate Co., True Texas Roofing Pros, Buffalo Springs Lake, Buffalo’s Backyard Restaurant & Bar, and private supporters Scott and Kristy Doss and Michael and Chana Damron. Their involvement underscores the community’s commitment to helping families affected by childhood cancer.

Family‑friendly atmosphere

Families are encouraged to attend, even if they do not own a boat. Participants arriving between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. receive free gate admission, making the event accessible to a broad audience. Organizers invite anglers to bring their fishing gear, share their best bass‑fishing stories, and enjoy a day on the water while supporting a vital cause.

While the biggest prize is the $500 awarded to the overall big bass winner, every entry, raffle ticket, and donation contributes to a larger safety net for local families confronting childhood cancer. The event highlights how a shared love of fishing can translate into meaningful community impact.

How to get involved

Anyone interested in participating or supporting the cause can register online or at the lake on the day of the tournament. For more information, visit the Casting For A Cure website or contact the event organizers directly.
