Casper to Close 12th & Conwell Intersection for Sewer Repair Sept. 22-29

Casper, Wyoming – The City of Casper announced that the intersection of 12th Avenue and Conwell Street will be closed starting Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7 a.m. The closure is necessary to replace a severely degraded sanitary sewer manhole, a critical piece of the city’s wastewater infrastructure.

Why the closure is needed

Public Services Director Krista Johnston explained that the aging manhole poses a risk to the sanitary sewer system. “We have an urgent need to replace a sanitary sewer manhole that is severely degraded,” Johnston said. “The work will require crews to work late into the night and early into the morning on September 22 and 23.”

Johnston added that performing the work during nighttime hours, when sewer flows are at their lightest, will reduce the need for more extensive sewer bypass work and prevent additional street closures later in the year.

Detour routes for motorists

To keep traffic moving, the city has established detour routes that drivers should follow while the intersection remains closed. Recommended alternate streets include 4th Street, 5th Street, Beverly Avenue, McKinley Street, Farnum Street, and 15th Street. Detour signs will be placed well in advance of the closure, and city crews will monitor traffic flow throughout the project.

Timeline and reopening

The intersection is expected to reopen by Tuesday, Sept. 29, once the new manhole is installed and all safety inspections are completed. City officials will keep residents updated on any changes to the schedule through the City of Casper website and local news outlets.

Impact on local businesses and residents

Local businesses near the intersection have been notified of the upcoming work and are encouraged to plan for temporary changes in foot traffic. Residents are asked to be patient and follow posted signage to ensure a smooth flow of vehicles and pedestrians.

City’s commitment to infrastructure

This project reflects Casper’s ongoing commitment to maintaining essential public utilities and ensuring the health and safety of its citizens. By addressing the sewer issue promptly, the city aims to avoid larger, costlier repairs in the future and preserve the reliability of its wastewater system.
