Casper Secures $150,000 Grant for Hogadon Ski Lift Replacement

The Casper City Council has taken a significant step in enhancing local recreational facilities by accepting a $150,000 grant from the Natrona County Recreation Joint Powers Board. This funding will support the replacement of the aging chairlift at Hogadon Basin Ski Area, a vital component for both local tourism and youth recreation.

Importance of the Lift Replacement

The current chairlift, installed in 1981, has exceeded its 40-year lifespan, according to Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities Director Zulima Lopez. While maintenance efforts have kept it operational, Lopez expressed concerns about potential mechanical failures that could lead to the ski area’s closure. Such a closure would not only impact local tourism but also threaten the future of alpine race teams at Natrona County and Kelly Walsh high schools. The loss of these programs could jeopardize Wyoming’s ability to maintain a sanctioned statewide alpine skiing program.

Project Funding and Future Plans

The total cost for the new lift is estimated at just under $3.4 million, with the overall project budget expected to exceed $4 million. This includes site preparation, bicycle hangers, and tower-mounted lighting for the Dreadnaught run to enhance night skiing. To secure the grant, the city must provide a 25% match of $37,500, funded through donor contributions and revenue from a facility fee established in 2025.

With the grant secured, the city plans to place a manufacturing order for the new lift this fall. All grant funds must be utilized by May 4, 2027. Recent upgrades to Hogadon include a new lodge opened in 2017 and the introduction of night skiing in 2021, reflecting the city’s ongoing commitment to improving local recreational facilities.
