CASPER, WY — The beloved neon Thunderbird that crowns Casper College’s campus has been revived after a wind‑driven collapse. Local neon artist Connie Morgan, whose studio GloW Neon Lights is known for custom lighting projects, was commissioned to rebuild the sign and reinforce its mounting.
Background and original construction
According to Morgan, the original sign dates back to the early 1960s when welding students fabricated the metal framework. “If I remember correctly, it was made by some welding students,” she recalled. The college later removed the aging structure, repainted it, and asked Morgan to add neon tubing.
What caused the failure
During the recent refurbishment, a new bolt was installed to secure the base. Morgan says the bolt placement created two holes that were too close together, reducing the surface area needed to resist Casper’s notorious winds. “When he put the hole in, I was like, ‘Uh oh, those two holes are too close together,’” she said. The weakened mounting could not withstand the repeated pressure and twisting of the wind, and the sign eventually fell, ripping out a transformer.
Rebuilding the mascot
Despite a full‑time job at the college and numerous other commissions, Morgan devoted 10–12 hours to fabricate new neon tubes and reinstall the sign. The neon color is a pure red, matching the college’s colors, and Morgan notes that red is the true color of neon when electrically charged.
Improved base and future durability
The sign was reinstalled in the fall of 2023 on an improved base that now accommodates electric cables and provides a sturdier anchor. Morgan believes the new design will hold up against even the strongest Wyoming gusts. “I don’t think they’ll pay me a third time to remake it,” she said, expressing confidence in the durability of the current installation.
Community significance
The Thunderbird is more than a decorative piece; it serves as a visual rallying point for students, faculty, and residents who pass by the campus each day. Its restoration underscores the college’s commitment to preserving campus traditions while adapting to the practical challenges of the local environment.
Looking ahead
With the sign now securely mounted, Casper College can continue to showcase its mascot proudly, reinforcing school spirit and community pride. The project also highlights the value of local artisans like Morgan, whose expertise keeps Casper’s landmarks vibrant and resilient.
