Performers at Casa Bonita, a Mexican restaurant in Denver, Colorado, are claiming unsafe working conditions, including hypothermia and chlorine toxicity from the diving pool, as well as a lack of security for costumed performers who have been grabbed sexually by patrons.
Brooke Shields Supports Performers
Actress Brooke Shields, who is also the president of Actor’s Equity, has been supporting the performers in their negotiations with management. Shields made a surprise visit to the restaurant in March, delivering a letter asking for better wages and working conditions for the performers.
The performers, who are represented by Actor’s Equity, have been negotiating with management since April 2024. They are asking for better protections, including an active shooter policy, emergency action plan, and security for performers who interact with patrons. They are also seeking a raise, as they are currently paid between $21 and $26 an hour, which is about $10 per hour less than servers who also receive tips.
Management Response
Casa Bonita’s management has stated that they value the well-being of their team members, but have not commented on the ongoing labor negotiations. The restaurant’s owners, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who are also the creators of South Park, have not responded to requests for comment.
The performers have filed at least seven labor complaints against Casa Bonita with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging retaliation and refusal to bargain. Shields has expressed disappointment with the lack of progress in the negotiations, stating that the performers are not being cared for and that it is disheartening to see them put their lives at risk.
