Capital One reveals top electric vehicles financed by its customers in 2026

Capital One, one of the nation’s largest auto lenders, released its first‑half 2026 financing report, highlighting which electric vehicles (EVs) its borrowers are choosing. The data, compiled from loans issued between January and July, offers a clear picture of consumer preferences for affordable, stylish EVs that fit family budgets.

Why EVs are gaining traction

Industry analysts point to lower operating costs, quieter cabins and reduced emissions as key draws for electric cars. Home charging at night, when electricity rates are typically lower, adds another financial incentive. These benefits, combined with a growing selection of models, have made EVs an increasingly attractive option for families seeking both practicality and fun.

Top‑financed models

According to auto analyst Brian Moody, the vehicles topping Capital One’s list share two common traits: eye‑catching style and affordability. “The average EV shopper wants anything but an average electric car,” Moody said. “Buyers want something fun while still prioritizing a low price and practicality.”

Tesla Model 3 dominates the rankings. Five model‑year variants appear in the top ten, with the 2023 Model 3 taking the lead. The 2022, 2021, 2019 and 2018 versions also rank highly, reflecting the model’s lasting appeal and consistent design. Average sales prices for the Model 3 variants range from the low $30,000s to just under $40,000, offering a near‑new look at a used‑car price.

Tesla Model Y follows closely. The midsize electric SUV, praised for its roomy interior and decent range, appears in three model‑year versions (2023, 2022 and 2021). Moody noted that American buyers continue to favor small SUVs, regardless of powertrain, and the Model Y’s blend of performance and practicality resonates with families.

Chevrolet Equinox EV (2026) is the only brand‑new vehicle on the list. The compact electric SUV, equipped with a suite of advanced driver‑assistance systems, attracted buyers looking for a family‑friendly option at a reasonable price. Its average financed price was $39,841.

Other notable entries include the 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5, a budget‑friendly compact SUV with distinctive ‘80s‑inspired styling, and the 2024 Ford Mustang Mach‑E, a sporty electric SUV that lets owners express personality while staying electric. Both models were financed at average prices of $25,343 and $25,948 respectively.

Used EVs outperform new models

Capital One’s report shows a clear preference for used electric vehicles. From January to July 2026, more used EVs were financed than new ones, with the sole exception of the Chevrolet Equinox EV. Moody explained that many used EVs still carry battery and power‑train warranties, making them a “very good purchase” for shoppers seeking long‑term reliability at a lower cost.

He added, “It’s hard to find a vehicle that offers as many safety and comfort features, a long warranty, and a reasonable price. Buying a used EV with a warranty is the best deal most shoppers are going to get.”

What this means for families

For families focused on budgeting, the data underscores that electric transportation is becoming more accessible. Affordable models like the Ioniq 5 and Mach‑E provide distinctive styling without breaking the bank, while the continued popularity of the Model 3 and Model Y demonstrates that even high‑profile brands are offering value‑oriented options.

As more households adopt EVs, the market is likely to see increased competition among manufacturers to deliver lower prices, longer warranties, and features that appeal to parents seeking safety and practicality.

Looking ahead

Capital One will continue to track financing trends throughout the year, offering insight into how consumer demand shapes the electric‑vehicle landscape. For families and faith‑centered communities that prioritize stewardship of resources, the shift toward affordable EVs aligns with both economic prudence and environmental responsibility.
