CARLSBAD, N.M. — A breach in a canal on the north side of Carlsbad has led to flooding in nearby areas, city officials report.
The breach occurred Tuesday along a Carlsbad Irrigation District canal near Callaway Drive. Water from the damaged canal has spread into adjacent neighborhoods and streets, creating hazardous conditions for residents and drivers.
Officials are urging people to steer clear of the affected streets and neighborhoods “until further notice.” City crews are responding to the scene and may close additional roads as they assess damage and work to contain the flooding.
Emergency responders on site caution residents not to attempt to drive or walk through standing or moving floodwaters. Even shallow water can hide hazards and can disable vehicles or sweep people off their feet.
Residents should move vehicles to higher ground if it is safe to do so, keep children and pets away from flooded areas, and monitor official city communications for updates. The city says it will provide more information as it becomes available.
