Canada loses 41,700 jobs in August as U.S. Trump tariffs take effect

Ottawa – Canada’s employment picture took a sudden turn in August, with Statistics Canada reporting a loss of 41,700 jobs, pushing the national unemployment rate to a steady 6.4%. The decline marks a dramatic swing from the 75,100 jobs added in July and follows a summer that was buoyed by temporary hiring spikes tied to the census and the Soccer World Cup.

Tariffs from the Trump administration drive the slowdown

The timing coincides with the rollout of President Trump’s new 50% tariffs on a select group of Canadian exports. While the duties affect a relatively small share of total trade, they are heavily weighted toward sectors such as wood products that are already vulnerable. Analysts warned that the tariffs could quickly erode the recent labor‑market momentum, and the August data appear to confirm those concerns.

Full‑time and part‑time jobs both shrink

Full‑time positions bore the brunt of the loss, falling by 35,900, while part‑time roles declined by another 5,800. The service‑producing industries—healthcare, education, transportation, and finance—account for four out of every five Canadian workers and suffered the greatest employment drop, shedding 51,500 jobs overall.

Broader economic context

Despite the job losses, the unemployment rate remains at a two‑year low, a testament to a labor force that has been tightening due to stricter immigration rules and an aging population. The labor force itself contracted for the first time since February, standing at 22.632 million.

Younger workers felt the pinch as the youth unemployment rate rose 0.3 percentage points to 12.9%, reversing a brief decline earlier in the year. Meanwhile, the average hourly wage for permanent employees fell to a 2% increase in August, the lowest growth rate in more than seven years outside the pandemic period.

Market reaction

The Canadian dollar slipped 0.51% to C$1.3860 per U.S. dollar (72.15 U.S. cents) following the report. Two‑year government bond yields edged up 1.3 basis points to 2.469%, reflecting investor concern over the emerging trade friction.

Looking ahead

Economists expect the new U.S. tariffs and Canada’s retaliatory measures, set to take effect early next week, to further dampen hiring momentum. The industry outlook will hinge on how quickly businesses can adjust to higher export costs and whether alternative markets can offset the loss of U.S. demand.

For now, the data serve as an early warning that the previously resilient Canadian economy may be entering a period of slower growth, driven in large part by policy decisions made south of the border.
