A tornado that touched down in Campbell County, Wyoming, on June 22 has been rated an EF-2 by the National Weather Service in Rapid City, South Dakota. The tornado formed from a strong thunderstorm that developed near the Bighorn Mountains on Monday afternoon.
The storm moved southeast through Campbell County, bringing a tornado, strong winds, and large hail before continuing into Converse County. An NWS survey team visited the area on June 23 to assess the damage. Meteorologist Eric Helgeson said crews found “EF2 tornado damage at a house on Black and Yellow Road.”
The tornado was estimated to be at wind speeds of 115 mph when it hit the house. According to the NWS, the tornado touched down at 2:31 p.m. and remained on the ground until 3:05 p.m. It traveled 12.7 miles through Campbell County. Crews also documented snapped power poles and extensive tree damage along the tornado’s path.
Despite the damage, no injuries or deaths were reported. The storm also brought other severe weather, including an 81 mph wind gust west northwest of Savageton and reports of hail as large as golf balls.
