California saw a decrease in hate crime events in 2025 compared to the previous year, with 1,955 reported incidents, a 3.4% decrease from 2024. However, there was a significant increase in anti-citizenship bias incidents, with a 150% rise from 16 events in 2024 to 40 in 2025.
Hate Crime Incidents by Region
Los Angeles County recorded the highest number of hate crime incidents, with 795 events, mostly from the city of Los Angeles. The overall hate crime incidents showed a 6.2% increase in events involving racial and ethnic bias, with a 30% surge in bias events against Hispanics.
According to California State Attorney General Rob Bonta, the reduction in hate crimes can be attributed to the state’s continued partnership and collaborations with local law enforcement agencies. However, Bonta also stated that the rise in hate crimes, particularly those related to race, citizenship, and gender, can be linked to the rhetoric of the Trump administration and the Republican party.
Authorities are urging victims of hate crimes to report incidents to local law enforcement and to take steps to protect themselves.
