Cal Poly’s baseball team wrapped up a remarkable season with a tough loss to West Virginia in the NCAA Super Regionals held in Morgantown. Despite the setback, the Mustangs have much to celebrate, having reached this stage for the first time in program history.

The Mustangs faced a formidable West Virginia team, falling 17-1 in the decisive game. Cal Poly initially took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly by Ryan Tayman that brought home Nate Castellon. However, the Mountaineers quickly took control, scoring seven runs in the second inning. Carson Turnquist, a Paso Robles High School alum, struggled on the mound, allowing six runs in that inning.
Reliever Chris Downs also faced challenges, conceding six runs in his 2 2/3 innings of work. Corden Pettey, another bullpen arm, allowed four runs in 1 2/3 innings. The Mountaineers’ offensive onslaught included seven home runs, with Ben Lumsden hitting two and driving in five runs.
Season Achievements
Despite the outcome in Morgantown, Cal Poly’s season was filled with achievements. The Mustangs finished as co-champions of the Big West regular season, won the Big West Tournament, and emerged victorious in the NCAA Los Angeles Regional. Their journey to the Super Regionals marks a significant milestone for the program.
West Virginia’s victory propels them to their first-ever College World Series appearance in Omaha, Nebraska, highlighting the competitive nature of this year’s tournament.
