Caitlin Clark Criticized for Flopping

USA Today columnist Nancy Armour has criticized WNBA player Caitlin Clark for flopping and berating officials, claiming it puts Black and queer players in danger. Armour argues that Clark’s reactions to missed calls create a false narrative about opposing players and can lead to racist and homophobic messages being sent to them.

Armour’s Argument

Armour points to two recent plays as proof that Clark exaggerates contact and creates false narratives about opposing players. However, the slow-motion video of one of the plays shows that Clark was indeed hit in the quad by an opposing player’s knee. Clark later said she played the remainder of the game with a contusion.

Armour’s column has been met with criticism, with many arguing that she is holding Clark responsible for the actions of others and that her argument is not supported by evidence. Clark has previously spoken out against harassment and hate directed at opponents, teammates, and coaches, and has told people not to use her name to push racist or misogynistic agendas.

Context

The WNBA has been at the center of controversy in recent months, with several players speaking out against harassment and hate. Clark’s situation is just one example of the challenges that players face in the league.
