CAIR denies press access to policy conference, prompting Republican criticism

Washington, D.C. – The Council on American‑Islamic Relations (CAIR), one of the nation’s largest Muslim‑rights organizations, refused entry to a reporter from The Center Square for its annual policy conference at the Washington Hilton. The decision sparked criticism from Republican officials who argue the ban undermines transparent journalism.

Private‑event claim blocks independent coverage

Corey Saylor, CAIR’s research and advocacy director, announced Saturday morning that the conference was a private event and that the reporter would not be allowed to attend. “Unfortunately, you won’t be able to attend the conference,” Saylor said.

Earlier, The Center Square had requested press passes and, after receiving no response by Aug. 19, purchased a $100 ticket to attend. The outlet listed three media members as speakers: Hena Zuberi of Muslim Matters, Ryan Grim of Drop Site News, and Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks.

CAIR initially sent a welcoming email to the reporter, but the evening before the conference a staffer, using the name of national executive director Edward Ahmed Mitchell, sent a follow‑up stating the event was closed to the press. Saylor later qualified the remark, saying the organization “didn’t want all coverage of the event.”

Republican lawmakers question CAIR’s transparency

Rep. Randy Fine (R‑FL) seized on the incident, asking, “Why would you say the killing of 1,200 people made you happy?” and labeling Awad’s past statements as lies. Fine has previously sponsored legislation to direct the State Department to investigate designating CAIR as a terrorist organization.

Both Texas and Florida governors, who are Republicans, have also designated CAIR as a terrorist organization under state law. While a federal judge has temporarily blocked enforcement of Florida’s order, the litigation remains ongoing.

CAIR’s stated mission versus its actions

CAIR’s mission emphasizes enhancing understanding of Islam, protecting civil rights, promoting justice, and empowering American Muslims. Critics argue that denying press access contradicts those goals, especially given the organization’s receipt of nearly $500,000 in federal grants and tens of millions in state grants, primarily from California.

The group’s website asserts that “media narratives play a critical role in shaping public perception,” and it claims to promote fair coverage through media training and proactive public‑relations initiatives. Yet the conference’s closed‑press policy raises questions about the consistency of that commitment.

Broader context of media access and civil‑rights advocacy

The incident highlights a tension between advocacy groups seeking to control their messaging and independent journalists tasked with providing unbiased reporting. While CAIR argues the event was private, the presence of multiple media speakers suggests a public‑interest component that many believe should be open to broader coverage.

For now, The Center Square’s reporter was unable to attend, and the organization’s media‑relations strategy remains under scrutiny from both the press and elected officials who champion free‑speech principles.
