The White House grounds are undergoing a transformation as a new mixed martial arts arena is being constructed on the South Lawn. This project, initiated by President Donald Trump, is set to host a UFC event on June 14, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence and President Trump’s 80th birthday.
Event Details
The arena, dubbed “The Claw” by UFC President Dana White, a long-time ally of President Trump, will host a night of cage fighting. The octagon, a signature feature of UFC events, will be surrounded by a chain-link fence, allowing combatants to showcase their skills in front of more than 4,000 spectators. Many of the tickets are expected to be distributed to military personnel, honoring their service.
In addition to the arena, viewing areas are planned on the Ellipse, a large park south of the White House, to accommodate an additional 100,000 spectators. The weigh-ins for the event will take place at the historic Lincoln Memorial.
Background and Context
President Trump has a long history with UFC, having supported the organization in its early days when it was less regulated and faced criticism from figures like the late Senator John McCain, who referred to the sport as “human cockfighting.” Over the years, UFC has gained legitimacy and popularity, culminating in a significant media rights deal with Paramount in 2025.
This construction is part of a series of projects initiated by President Trump since his return to the White House in January 2025. Other projects include a $400 million state ballroom and renovations to Lafayette Square and the Reflecting Pool. Plans are also underway for an Independence Arch, inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
