Café Meze Is Out — Porch & Cellar Has Rochester’s Best Wine List

Porch & Cellar sits on the ground floor of a brick building on Broadway, and it has one of the most carefully assembled wine lists in southeastern Minnesota. That’s not a small thing in a city where most restaurants treat wine as an afterthought — a few reds, a few whites, whatever the distributor pushed that month.

Walk in on a weekday evening and the room feels genuinely calm. There’s no ambient noise pumped through speakers at a volume designed to make you drink faster. The lighting is warm without being dim enough to make reading a menu an ordeal. The space has about forty seats, a bar along one wall, and a wine rack that stretches ceiling-high behind it. It looks like someone actually thought about it.

The list runs about two hundred bottles, with a strong lean toward European producers — Burgundy, the Loire, northern Italy, some Rhône. But it’s not a list built to impress sommeliers at the expense of everyone else. The staff can talk you through it without condescension, and if you tell them what you’re eating or roughly what you’re in the mood for, they’ll point you somewhere useful. A glass of Muscadet with the oysters is exactly the kind of simple, correct recommendation you hope for and rarely get.

The food menu is small and rotates, which is either a feature or an annoyance depending on how attached you get to things. Expect maybe eight or ten dishes — some charcuterie, a composed salad, one or two pasta options, something with good local pork, a fish preparation that changes with what’s available. The kitchen is clearly working in service of the wine program rather than competing with it, which is the right instinct. Portions are modest. Plan on ordering two or three things and sharing.

Prices are fair for what you’re getting. A glass of something interesting runs eight to fourteen dollars, and the bottle selection covers a wide range — you can find something solid under forty, and the upper end of the list goes well past a hundred without being gratuitous about it. Food dishes are mostly in the twelve-to-twenty dollar range.

Friday and Saturday nights fill up, and they don’t take reservations for parties under six. Go early — by five-thirty you’ll almost always find a seat at the bar — or go on a Tuesday when half the tables are open and the bartender has time to actually talk. That’s when Porch & Cellar is at its best: a little quiet, a little unhurried, the kind of place where you open a second bottle because the conversation got good and no one’s rushing you out.

Rochester has plenty of places to drink. It has very few places to actually drink well. Porch & Cellar is one of them, and it’s earned the reputation it has among the people in this city who care about this kind of thing.
