Byron Donalds speaks to UCF Turning Point USA chapter on housing, AI and abortion

On Thursday, Congressman Byron Donalds addressed the Turning Point USA chapter at the University of Central Florida (UCF) in Orlando, marking the first anniversary of the tragic killing of political activist Charlie Kirk. The event, hosted by UCF TPUSA president Kyle Christy, gave local students a chance to hear the Republican candidate for governor discuss the issues that matter most to young Floridians.

Local concerns top the agenda

Christy opened the Q&A by noting that many students view Florida as a place for young people rather than a “retirement home.” He said campus conservatives are focused on a range of topics, from data‑center development and privacy to taxation and traditional conservative values.

Data‑center law defended

When a student asked about recent legislation regulating data‑center construction, Donalds highlighted a law signed by Governor Ron DeSantis that keeps final approval in the hands of local governments. “That’s state law today, and we’re going to keep that law in place,” he said, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to local control.

Housing affordability for young families

UCF junior Jasmine Stewart expressed her personal concerns about buying a first home. “I’m young, in a good relationship, hoping to get married, and being able to buy that first home is a big issue for me,” she said. Stewart noted she did not back Donalds in the GOP primary because she felt he was not the strongest pro‑life candidate, but she believes he would be the better choice for protecting unborn children compared with the Democratic nominee.

Pro‑life stance reaffirmed

Stewart asked whether Donalds would push for further restrictions on the abortion pill. Donalds responded, “I am pro‑life. I’m very happy that we have a heartbeat‑protection act on the books. We want to keep that bill on the books, keep that law on the books, but we also now want to do the hard work of continuing to educate mothers about what all their options are.”

Election outlook

Donald’s appearance comes as the Republican field prepares for the November 2026 general election, where he will face Democratic nominee David Jolly. Jolly recently campaigned in South Florida, meeting customers and employees at a family‑owned restaurant in Broward County, underscoring the competitive nature of the race.

What this means for local voters

The UCF event highlights how state‑wide policy debates are resonating on college campuses. Young voters are hearing directly from the candidate about how state legislation will affect their daily lives—whether it’s keeping local control over data‑center siting, protecting unborn children, or working to make home ownership more attainable. As the governor’s race tightens, events like this give Floridians a clearer picture of each candidate’s priorities.

For students and community members who want to stay informed, the Turning Point USA chapter plans additional meet‑and‑greets with both parties’ candidates in the coming weeks.
