Byron Donalds Calls Out David Jolly’s Policy Reversals in Tight Florida Governor Race

Florida voters are witnessing a sharply contested governor’s race as Republican congressman Byron Donalds intensifies criticism of Democratic challenger David Jolly. Donalds argues that Jolly’s record shows a series of complete policy reversals that betray Floridians’ trust.

Policy flips under scrutiny

During the 2016 congressional campaign, Jolly, then a Republican, described himself as pro‑life, authored legislation to defund Planned Parenthood, co‑sponsored fetal‑personhood bills and voted for a federal 20‑week abortion ban. Today, as a Democrat, Jolly identifies as “pro‑choice,” supports codifying the Roe v. Wade framework and says he would veto any legislation that restricts abortion access.

Immigration is another flashpoint. As a Republican, Jolly campaigned on securing the border, backed tighter screening for Syrian and Iraqi refugees and voted for the American SAFE Act. In his current campaign, he advocates for “wide gates” for workers and asylum seekers, calling the traditional link between immigration and crime “gross,” “immoral” and “wrong.” Donalds notes that Florida has voted for President Trump in the last three presidential cycles, largely because of Trump’s strong immigration stance.

Offshore drilling controversy

Donald’s campaign also highlights Jolly’s post‑Deepwater Horizon lobbying work. Within a year of the 2010 oil spill, Jolly’s firm represented a client that promoted legislation to expand offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, specifically H.R. 909, the Roadmap for America’s Energy Future. Although Jolly claimed he never lobbied for offshore drilling, PolitiFact rated that claim “Mostly False” after confirming his attendance at a meeting where the bill was discussed.

Donald’s remarks to Fox News Digital emphasized the pattern: “Deepwater Horizon exploded in the Gulf of America, David Jolly went and became a lobbyist for more oil drilling off the coast of Florida. That is a fact, and it shows a history of saying whatever will get him paid.”

Health‑care stance and debate attendance

On health policy, Donalds points out that Jolly opposed Obamacare while in Congress but now says he would expand the program in Florida. “These are just some of the complete shifts we’ve seen in what he stands for,” Donalds said.

The candidates also differ on debate participation. Donalds has agreed to three proposed debates, while Jolly, after previously accepting two invitations, has declined to appear in any debates this cycle. “Now he’s ducking debates,” Donalds told Fox News Digital. “He won’t debate me because he knows that on a debate stage I will hold him accountable for these things.”

Polls and campaign dynamics

RealClearPolitics’ average shows Donalds holding a roughly four‑point lead as the race tightens. Both campaigns continue to trade attacks, with Jolly focusing on data‑center development and accusing Donalds of prioritizing partisan culture‑war battles over rising housing, insurance and health‑care costs.

Fox News Digital reached out to Jolly’s campaign for comment; a response was not received at the time of publication.

What voters should consider

Florida voters face a choice between a candidate who emphasizes consistent conservative principles and a challenger whose record reflects multiple issue reversals. As the primary approaches, the focus remains on whether policy consistency or political flexibility will best serve the state’s future.
