Former President George W. Bush and Michelle Obama paid homage to their 2018 viral moment when the two attended the Obama Presidential Center opening on Thursday, June 18. After more than a decade of planning and construction, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and their daughters, Malia and Sasha Obama, were on site to see the center finally open to the public.
A Long-Awaited Opening
Also in attendance were all the former living presidents and first ladies, excluding President Donald Trump and Melania Trump. At the event, Bush caught up with friend Michelle Obama, and the two almost re-created their funny moment in 2018 when he handed her a mint at John McCain’s funeral.
This time, the duo smiled and posed together as Michelle Obama held a tin box of Altoids. Photographers captured the sweet interaction between the two, as well as a group snap of the Obamas, Bushes, Clintons, and Bidens posing together.
A Friendship Forms
In April, Bush opened up about his friendship with Michelle Obama in a TODAY interview with daughter Jenna Bush Hager to celebrate the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary. During their talk, he recalled the exchange the two had at McCain’s funeral.
Michelle Obama also spoke about the moment in 2018 when she was promoting her memoir, “Becoming.” She praised Bush, saying, “He has the presence of mind and the sense of humor to bring me a mint, and he made it a point to give me that mint right then and there, and that’s the beauty of George Bush.”
