Crews from Burns & Scalo Roofing spent an entire day on Tuesday installing a brand‑new roof for Navy veteran James Seybert, a resident of Allegheny County. The work began at sunup and continued until sundown, reflecting the company’s commitment to the Roofs for the Red, White and Blue program, which selects one veteran each month to receive a free roof as a thank‑you for their service.
Veteran’s reaction
“Completely shocked, overwhelmed, very humbling,” Seybert said after seeing the crew on his home. He admitted he was initially skeptical, “Honestly very skeptical. We were like, yeah, there are people out there that are going to do this for you free. And next thing you know, they’re on the roof, and you have a whole bunch of money.” The new roof, he explained, was a huge relief after injuries sustained while serving as a firefighter on an ammunition ship.
Why shelter matters
“Our president always says we provide one of the three basic needs for a living: food, shelter, and water. We provide the shelter,” said Julianna Everly, spokesperson for Burns & Scalo Roofing. “So that’s our best way of giving back — a free roof, completely free of charge.” Seybert’s home had a roof that was over 30 years old and in dire need of replacement, making the project especially timely.
Community impact
The Roofs for the Red, White and Blue initiative is a local expression of gratitude that aligns with traditional family values and the Christian principle of caring for those who have served. By ensuring a safe, dry home for a veteran, the program supports the foundational need for shelter, allowing families to focus on other aspects of life and faith.
After the work was completed, Seybert expressed his desire to pay the kindness forward. “I hope there’s a lucky veteran next year. Anything that I can do to help that process, I’m here for them,” he said.
Looking ahead
Company officials confirmed the roof was finished by the end of the day and that the program will move on to select its next veteran recipient. The effort highlights how local businesses can partner with charitable programs to make a tangible difference in the lives of service members and their families.
For residents interested in supporting similar initiatives, Burns & Scalo Roofing encourages community members to volunteer, donate, or spread the word about the program’s mission.
