Burks Elementary Teacher Tommy Gillett Named 2026 Region 10 Elementary Teacher of the Year

Burks Elementary teacher Tommy Gillett was honored this July as the 2026 Region 10 Elementary Teacher of the Year, a distinction announced by McKinney Independent School District. In a Q&A, Gillett shared the personal journey that led him to teaching and how he adapts to the ever‑changing landscape of public education in Texas.

Why teaching?

Gillett said he chose education because it combined several things that mattered to him: a love of elementary school memories, a desire for meaningful work, and a creative outlet. After a stint renting cars, he found that teaching gave him a sense of purpose he had been missing.

What the award means

Receiving the regional honor validates years of effort, especially during “difficult times, mistakes, and moments when I felt like giving up,” Gillett explained. He sees the recognition as a boost not just for himself but for his students, colleagues, and mentors who contributed to his growth.

Teaching philosophy

Gillett asks himself, “If I were the student, would I want to be here?” He defines fun as intellectual engagement—puzzles, word games, skits, and creation—rather than goofing off. High expectations, he says, come from showing students what’s possible through preparation, respectful interaction, and personal ownership of learning.

Advice for new teachers

He urges first‑year educators to remember that feeling overwhelmed is normal and does not indicate failure. “You can’t quit on these kids. They’re counting on you,” he recalled his mother telling him. Gillett stresses that good teachers are imperfect, focusing on what they can control and seeking help when needed.

Adapting to change

While new initiatives and trends constantly emerge, Gillett believes core values—patience, self‑control, respect, humility, honesty, accountability, and hard work—remain timeless. He concentrates on what he can control: his students, their outcomes, and the quality of his lessons.

Support from McKinney ISD

Moving to Texas in 2021, Gillett found opportunity with McKinney ISD, describing the district’s staff as “deeply dedicated to the craft of teaching.” He appreciates the freedom to teach authentically and to share ideas through professional development and district design teams.

Future goals

Looking ahead, Gillett aims to continue mastering his craft, develop new lessons, and share effective strategies with colleagues. He likens teaching to sports—each year is a new season with fresh challenges and chances to improve.

Impact on students

His ultimate hope is that students leave his classroom believing they can tackle hard tasks. “Every minute counts,” he says, reinforcing the belief that time and effort have purpose.
