Burbank community mourns beloved pilot ‘Helicopter George’ Marciniw

George Marciniw, known affectionately as “Helicopter George,” was a fixture in Burbank for decades. A 1974 graduate of Burbank High School, he built deep roots in the city he called home, sharing his passion for aviation with anyone who crossed his path.

A favorite local spot

One of Marciniw’s most cherished places was The Blue Room, a longtime Burbank bar where staff and regulars greeted him by nickname. Leonard Colón, who first met Marciniw in 2004, described a routine that rarely changed: after a day of flying, George would stroll into the bar, order water or soda water with a splash of cranberry juice, and snack on cashews while selecting songs from the jukebox via an app on his phone.

When the bar got busy, Marciniw would even pop behind the bar to wash dishes, joking that it helped the ladies notice him. His easy smile and friendly demeanor made him a beloved figure among patrons.

Flying over friends

Colón also rode aboard Marciniw’s NewsChopper 4, witnessing the partnership between the pilot and his crew. A favorite tradition involved flying low over The Blue Room patio after a flight, using the helicopter’s camera to spot who was gathered outside. “People started noticing and they would go out and wave,” Colón recalled, noting how the gesture became a cherished ritual for regulars.

Impact on students and fellow pilots

Beyond the bar, Marciniw’s love of aviation was evident in his work as a helicopter instructor. Former student Chris Burrows said George lived to fly and wanted to share that passion with as many people as possible. Burrows described Marciniw as serious and focused in the cockpit, yet warm and generous once the lesson ended. After training flights, the pair often stopped for iced tea and talked about life.

Friends say Marciniw regularly invited people on helicopter rides, eager to give others a taste of the sky. “He loved to fly. He lived to fly,” Burrows said, adding that George’s generosity extended far beyond the classroom.

Community remembers

Those who knew him describe a man whose “infectious smile” and “friendly heart” made everyone feel welcome. Colón, fighting back tears, said the loss feels like a “suck” that will linger. “We’re all shattered. It’s just sad,” he said, adding that Marciniw’s legacy will be defined not only by his decades in the sky but by the kindness he showed on the ground.

As Burbank residents continue to process the loss, they hold onto the memory of a man who loved both the heavens and the neighborhood bar where he spent countless evenings. His spirit lives on in the stories shared by friends, students, and the many who waved from The Blue Room patio as his helicopter passed overhead.
