Buffalo mother shares postpartum psychosis journey, urges family support

Two weeks after delivering her daughter by C‑section in January 2019, Buffalo resident Bridget María Chesterton, a 52‑year‑old history professor, was found curled on her bathroom floor, confused and unable to recognize basic details of her life.

Diagnosis and context

Chesterton was later diagnosed with postpartum psychosis, a rare but serious mental‑health emergency that affects roughly 1 to 2 per 1,000 new mothers. While most women with the condition do not harm their children, severe cases can lead to self‑harm or attempts to harm a newborn.

The case gained national attention after the tragic Lindsay Clancy trial in Massachusetts, where the role of postpartum psychosis in a mother’s actions is under scrutiny.

Family intervention and treatment

Chesterton’s husband, James Fitzsimmons, called her mother, Maria Chesterton, when he found her on the floor. The elder Chesterton described her daughter’s inability to remember the birth and her odd statements, such as claiming it was “meditation day” despite never having meditated.

Chesterton was admitted to BryLin Hospital, a crisis mental‑health facility in Buffalo, where she spent about two weeks before being released. Within days, her symptoms resurfaced, leading to an involuntary hospitalization for another two weeks.

Antipsychotic medication, combined with intensive family support—including her husband, parents, and a postpartum doula—proved essential. “She helped me learn how to take care of the baby, remember her, and become a parent again,” Chesterton said.

Recovery and hope

Over the following months, Chesterton’s condition improved gradually. She remained on antipsychotics for roughly a year and, by her daughter’s first birthday, felt she had returned to normal life.

Chesterton now plans to publish a poem about her experience and hopes her story will dispel misconceptions about postpartum psychosis, a condition she says is “widely misunderstood” and rarely discussed in society.

Medical perspective

Dr. Emily Williams, an OB/GYN at Buffalo, emphasized that while postpartum psychosis can affect any new mother, risk is higher for those with pre‑existing mental‑health conditions such as bipolar disorder—conditions Chesterton did not have.

Williams urged families to remain vigilant for signs like disorganized thinking, delusions, hallucinations, or sudden mood changes, and to seek immediate professional help.

Community message

Chesterton’s mother echoed the call for vigilance, noting that without a strong support system, outcomes could be far worse. The family’s experience underscores the importance of accessible mental‑health resources and compassionate community networks for new parents.
