Buc-ee’s, the Texas-based convenience store and gas station chain, is planning its first Iowa location in Urbandale with a proposed 74,000-square-foot store near I-80/35.
Project Details
The site, located at the corner of 100th Street and Northpark Drive, is currently a bean field. Former Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie owns the 20-acre property and is selling it to Buc-ee’s, which has requested a change to Urbandale’s comprehensive plan to proceed with the project.
Buc-ee’s is not a truck stop and does not allow long-haul semitrucks. The store would offer food, gas, diesel fuel, and more than 20 electric car chargers, operating 24 hours a day with a staff of 200 workers.
Community Reaction
The Urbandale Planning and Zoning Commission has approved the request to amend the city’s comprehensive plan, but not without some opposition. City officials emphasized that several commission and council votes are still required before the project can move forward, meaning the plan is far from finalized.
