Category Concerns
The Recording Academy recently introduced new categories, including one for Asian pop music performance. However, the rules for this category specify that the recordings must feature meaningful use of one or more Asian languages. BTS’s lead track, mostly sung in English, may not meet this requirement.
BTS has previously performed at the Grammy Awards and was the first K-pop act to receive a Grammy nomination, earning five nominations but not yet winning any. The group has a huge global following and recently performed in the United States during the World Cup final’s halftime show.
The decision by BTS to opt out of the Grammy Awards has sparked interest in the music industry, with the group stating that they hope music can be heard and loved for what it is, rather than being divided by region or language.
