Bryan and College Station Updates: School Budget, Free Meals, and New Cafe

The Bryan and College Station communities are experiencing significant developments this summer. Bryan ISD has approved a $2.2 million employee compensation package, despite ongoing financial challenges due to declining enrollment and limited state funding growth. The district is considering a voter-approval tax rate election (VATRE) to address these issues, with a decision needed by mid-August to place it on the November ballot.

College Station ISD’s Summer Meal Program

Meanwhile, College Station ISD is ensuring that children 18 and younger have access to nutritious meals during the summer. Free breakfasts and lunches are available at Lincoln Center, South Knoll, and Creek View elementary schools, with no questions asked. This initiative supports families by providing essential resources during the school break.

New Italian Cafe in College Station

In the business sector, Mr. G’s Pizzeria, a beloved Bryan restaurant, is expanding with a new venture in College Station. G’s Southside Italian Cafe is set to open in mid-July at Caprock Crossing, occupying the former Uptown Brunch location. This new establishment will operate independently while honoring its roots in Bryan’s Historic Downtown.

Community Events and Redevelopment Plans

Additionally, College Station is moving forward with the Harvey Road Corridor Redevelopment Plan. A timeline was presented to the city council, and a public kickoff event is scheduled for June 23 to engage the community in the project’s first phase. Residents can also look forward to a variety of summer events, including Juneteenth celebrations and a Fourth of July extravaganza featuring the Josh Abbott Band.
