Brown County, Wisconsin, is taking legal action against companies responsible for PFAS pollution at the Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport. The county board unanimously approved hiring outside counsel to pursue a lawsuit.
PFAS Pollution Discovered
PFAS, also known as forever chemicals, have been found to increase the risk of certain cancers and affect growth and fertility. The pollution was discovered during a recent land transfer at the airport, with environmental tests finding PFAS near the fuel farm and adjacent hangars.
The airport reported the matter to the DNR and is taking steps to address the issue, including retaining a qualified environmental consultant to conduct a comprehensive site investigation. Additional testing will be conducted, including at nearby private wells.
The county seeks to recover damages arising from the continuous and ongoing contamination of its property, including past and future costs associated with investigation, monitoring, remediation, and restoration.
