Bronx residents awoke to a serious fire on Montgomery Avenue between 174th and 175th Streets at approximately 7:46 a.m. on Tuesday. The blaze quickly engulfed multiple apartments, prompting a rapid response from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).

Casualties and injuries

Emergency crews found a 31-year-old man on the sidewalk after he apparently leapt from a window to escape the flames. He was transported to a local hospital in critical but stable condition. An unidentified man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four FDNY firefighters sustained non‑critical injuries while battling the fire. Five additional civilians were also injured, bringing the total number of hurt persons to ten.

Deputy Chief Andrew Holzmaier of the FDNY explained that the fire intensified after firefighters were forced to open a closed door and break windows to gain access. “The door was closed on arrival. Just through the course of the fire and having to break windows, opening doors, that may have assisted it,” Holzmaier said. He added that the fire spread further through the common bathroom wet walls, where plumbing and electrical lines run, allowing flames to move into adjoining and upper‑level apartments.
