Broken Arrow Family Warns After $1 Million Romance Scam

Broken Arrow Family Warns Others After Father Loses More Than $1 Million to Romance Scam

A Broken Arrow family is sharing their heartbreaking story after an 82-year-old man lost more than $1 million to an online romance scam over the final years of his life. They hope their experience serves as a warning for others before another family suffers a similar tragedy.

It wasn’t until a few months after John Gambill’s wife died that his family noticed a change in him. That’s when the online scams started; they say John turned into a completely different person, and everything he worked for was bled dry.

According to family members, the Broken Arrow man believed he had formed genuine relationships with women he met online. Over a period of approximately six years, he repeatedly sent money to scammers who convinced him they needed financial help for emergencies, travel expenses, and other hardships. By the time the deception came to light, more than $1 million had been lost.

A Scam That Lasted for Years

The victim’s family said they tried numerous times to convince him he was being manipulated, but like many romance scam victims, he remained convinced the relationships were real. Scammers often spend months—or even years—building trust before requesting money, making it difficult for victims to recognize the deception.

Online romance scams frequently target older adults, widows, widowers, and individuals living alone. Criminals exploit loneliness and emotional vulnerability, creating fake identities and fabricated life stories designed to gain trust before asking for financial assistance.

Why Romance Scams Are So Effective

Experts say these scams rarely begin with requests for money. Instead, scammers invest significant time developing what appears to be a genuine relationship through daily conversations, compliments, and promises of a future together. Once emotional trust has been established, they introduce financial emergencies or travel problems that require immediate assistance.

Unfortunately, victims often continue sending money even after family members express concerns. The emotional bond created by scammers can make it extremely difficult for victims to accept that the relationship is fraudulent.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Someone you’ve never met professes love quickly.
  • They always have an excuse for why they can’t meet in person.
  • They request money for travel, medical bills, business problems or emergencies.
  • They ask for gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers or other difficult-to-trace payments.
  • They encourage secrecy or ask you not to tell family members.

“Be Proactive”

The victim’s family hopes others will learn from their experience by having honest conversations with aging parents and relatives about online fraud. They encourage families to remain involved in financial discussions, ask questions about new online relationships, and report suspicious activity before losses become devastating.

Officials say if you believe someone you know is becoming the victim of a romance scam, it’s important to intervene early. Reporting suspicious activity to local law enforcement, financial institutions, and federal authorities may help prevent additional losses, although recovering stolen money is often difficult once it has been sent.
